Frequently Asked Questions
Who can get help with hormone therapy?
There are many parameters to consider when deciding on a treatment. Our endocrinologist is thorough and provides the best possible treatment for the individual. For some men, this will be testosterone therapy.
Is there an age limit for starting testosterone therapy?
There is no fixed age limit, but it is important to consider whether you want to have children in the future, as testosterone treatment can affect sperm quality.
The decision to start treatment is always made based on a comprehensive medical assessment in dialogue with the doctor. In some cases, it may be relevant to consider sperm storage before starting treatment.
Does testosterone treatment affect my sperm quality?
Testosterone treatment can reduce fertility, and it is therefore recommended to consider sperm storage before starting if you wish to have children in the future.
Treatment is considered lifelong, as symptoms of low testosterone often return significantly upon discontinuation – especially after prolonged treatment (over 6 months). These symptoms can persist for 4–6 years in some cases.
It is therefore important that the decision to start is made in close dialogue with a doctor and based on both current needs and future plans.
Is testosterone treatment lifelong?
Testosterone treatment is considered lifelong for most men, as the symptoms of low testosterone often return significantly upon discontinuation – especially after long-term treatment of more than 6 months.
Therefore, we hold regular follow-up consultations to ensure close monitoring and the possibility of early withdrawal if deemed appropriate. By closely monitoring both blood tests and symptom profile, we can assess whether – and when – it is appropriate to adjust or temporarily stop treatment.
Studies and clinical experience show that in some cases symptoms can persist for 4–6 years after stopping treatment. However, most men will gradually resume their own natural testosterone production, especially if treatment has lasted less than a year.
Therefore, it is important that before starting, you carefully consider whether you are ready for a long-term effort, and that the advantages and disadvantages are thoroughly discussed with a doctor.
It is also important to emphasize that testosterone therapy is not a quick fix, but a medical treatment that requires ongoing follow-up, adjustment and monitoring – both of blood values and symptoms.
The goal is not just to increase testosterone levels, but to improve quality of life in a safe, individual and sustainable way over time.
Will my testicles stop producing testosterone when I am on treatment? and will they become smaller?
When you receive testosterone as a medical treatment, the body's own production will usually be inhibited. This is because the body detects sufficient levels of the hormone and therefore downregulates the natural production in the testicles.
If treatment is stopped, natural production will usually resume gradually over weeks to months. How quickly this happens depends on the duration of treatment and dose, among other things – the higher the dose and the longer the course, the longer it may take for the body to regain balance.
At Valida Health we use low and carefully adjusted doses to minimize side effects. In some people, the testicles will become smaller during treatment as they do not produce testosterone to the same extent as before.
How high will my testosterone level go?
Our goal is to keep your testosterone levels within the physiological normal range. Treatment aims to relieve your symptoms and improve your quality of life by gradually bringing your testosterone levels up into this safe and well-researched range.
Safety is a high priority for us, and therefore we avoid exceeding the normal range. This is in line with existing research, which shows that doses above the normal range are considered overdose. The effects and safety of such doses are not sufficiently elucidated, and there may be a risk of harmful organ effects.
To ensure optimal and safe treatment, we perform regular blood tests, where we not only monitor your testosterone levels, but also measure hematocrit (blood viscosity) and PSA to ensure that the treatment does not cause unwanted side effects. Based on these values, we adjust the treatment individually as needed.
Can you get prostate cancer from the treatment?
No, we know today from large and long-term studies that testosterone treatment does not increase the risk of prostate cancer.
If you already have an unrecognized or existing nodule in your prostate, for example an early or latent prostate cancer, testosterone treatment can potentially stimulate the growth of this nodule. Testosterone is an androgen, and some prostate cancer cells are sensitive to androgens, meaning that hormone therapy can affect the growth of the tumor.
However, this does not mean that testosterone treatment itself causes prostate cancer or will always worsen an existing nodule. Therefore, it is important to screen for prostate problems, including measuring PSA and possibly further examinations, before starting treatment. This way, you can identify risks and make informed decisions.
Safe monitoring during treatment with regular PSA measurements and clinical assessments is essential to detect any changes early.
Can you get treatment for heart disease?
Many people with heart disease are welcome to receive testosterone therapy. We do not offer treatment to men with:
- Heart failure with pump function below 30%.
- Blood clot in the heart or stent insertion (balloon dilation) within the last 6 months.
- Blood clot in the brain or brain hemorrhage within the last 6 months.
- Untreated high blood pressure.
How quickly can I feel an effect from the treatment?
When treated with injections, most people experience an effect within approximately 2-3 months, and some notice improvements already after the first injection.
When using gel, the effect is typically seen within 2-3 months, and it will often gradually increase during the first 3-6 months of treatment.
Can you help men increase testosterone levels naturally?
We are happy to advise you on what steps you can take to raise your level. Together we can draw up a plan and schedule new control measurements to monitor progress.
Where can I get blood tests done?
You can have your blood test taken at all hospitals in the country. You book a time that suits you at your local hospital.
We also have a clinic in Hellerup where you can come in and have blood tests taken.
Do you do online consultations? Is the treatment possible without physical presence?
Yes. When you book an appointment from this page, you can choose to have it done by phone. Our healthcare staff will call you on the phone number provided. This also means that hormone therapy is offered nationwide where everything can be done online (with the exception of injections performed by our certified nurse).
Will you review my results with me?
Yes. 1 week after you have had your blood tests taken, we will review your results with you by telephone. This is included in the price.
During the consultation, we will talk about your future options and make a plan if necessary.
How safe is the treatment?
Valida Health is subject to the guidelines of the Danish Patient Safety Agency, the Danish Medicines and Health Authority.
It is essential that the doctor's instructions are followed carefully; otherwise, we reserve the right to terminate the treatment immediately. The prescription of testosterone is under the responsibility of an endocrinologist, who determines both the prescription and the acceptable level for the individual patient.
How are the injections done?
We have certified nurses who specialize in administering intramuscular injections. This service is included in our premium membership. As a clinic, we advise against self-administration as it may compromise both the efficacy and safety of the treatment, for which we cannot assume responsibility.
