What is protected against?

Shingles (herpes zoster) is a painful viral infection caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which also causes chickenpox. After a person has had chickenpox, the virus remains latent in the sensory nerves and can reactivate later in life as shingles. The disease typically manifests as a painful rash along a nerve pathway and can lead to postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a chronic pain condition in which nerve pain can last for months or years. Shingles occurs most frequently in people over 50 years of age, who are also at higher risk for complications.

What does the vaccine do?

The shingles vaccine Shingrix is ​​a recombinant, adjuvanted vaccine that stimulates the immune system to recognize and fight the varicella-zoster virus. It is designed to enhance the T-cell response, which is essential for preventing reactivation of the virus. Clinical studies have shown that Shingrix reduces the risk of shingles by up to 97% in adults aged 50-69 years and by 91% in people over 70 years. The vaccine also significantly reduces the risk of postherpetic neuralgia.

Vaccine course

Shingrix is ​​given as two doses administered 2-6 months apart. It is recommended for:

  • People over 50 years of age to prevent shingles and postherpetic neuralgia.
  • People over 18 years of age with immunosuppression, including patients undergoing cancer treatment, organ transplant recipients and people with autoimmune diseases.
