- Have the blood test taken in person at the time you have booked – if online, we will contact you and book blood tests for you at a local hospital near you
- Receive a thorough and personal review of your results by phone within 2-3 business days after the blood test has been taken. You will receive the results yourself on 'sundhed.dk' within 24 hours
Contents of the postpartum care package:
Iron
Function: Iron is necessary for the production of haemoglobin, which transports oxygen around the body.
Importance: Iron levels reflect the body's ability to produce blood cells and maintain energy. During pregnancy and childbirth, large amounts of iron are used to produce blood for both mother and child, which can lead to lower levels after birth. Iron deficiency can cause fatigue, dizziness, and a weakened immune system, so it is important to measure iron levels to ensure optimal recovery.
Fertin
Function: Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in the body.
Importance: Ferritin levels provide an indication of the body's iron stores. During pregnancy and childbirth, these stores can become depleted, especially due to blood loss during delivery. Low ferritin levels can lead to fatigue and reduced energy, even if hemoglobin appears normal. Measuring ferritin after childbirth helps assess the need for iron supplementation.
Hemoglobin (Hb)
Function: Hemoglobin is the oxygen-carrying protein in blood.
Importance: Hemoglobin levels indicate the blood's capacity to transport oxygen. During childbirth, blood loss can reduce hemoglobin, which can lead to fatigue, dizziness, and decreased physical performance. Measuring hemoglobin after childbirth helps identify anemia and support the body's recovery.
Leukocytes
Function: Leukocytes (white blood cells) are part of the immune system and protect against infections.
Importance: The number of leukocytes can indicate the activity of the immune system. After birth, the immune system can be temporarily affected by hormonal changes and physical stress. Measuring leukocytes helps to assess whether the body is recovering normally and does not have infections that could delay healing.
CRP (C-reactive protein)
Function: CRP is produced in the liver in response to inflammation.
Importance: The CRP level indicates whether there is inflammation or stress in the body. Childbirth is a physical strain that can trigger short-term inflammation. Elevated levels may indicate infection or complications, while normal values show that the body is recovering as expected.
Vitamin B12
Function: Vitamin B12 is essential for blood cell formation, nervous system function, and energy metabolism.
Importance: B12 levels can drop during pregnancy as the baby uses B12 for development. After birth, low B12 levels can contribute to fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and low energy, especially if you are breastfeeding. Measuring B12 helps ensure the body has enough for recovery and energy production.
Vitamin D
Function: Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption, maintenance of bones and teeth, and a well-functioning immune system.
Importance: Vitamin D levels can be low after pregnancy and childbirth, as the body's stores have been depleted. Low levels can affect energy, muscle function, and the immune system – and can be particularly relevant to monitor during breastfeeding. Measuring vitamin D provides insight into whether the body has sufficient levels for optimal recovery and well-being.
TSH (Thyroid-stimulating hormone)
Function: Produced in the pituitary gland and regulates the thyroid gland's hormone production.
Importance: The thyroid gland is affected by hormonal changes during and after pregnancy. For some women, TSH levels can change postpartum, which can lead to low energy, weight changes, and mood swings. Measuring TSH after birth helps detect any thyroid imbalances, so energy levels and metabolism can be stabilized.

Afterwards, you book an appointment for sample collection at the desired hospital yourself. Then you can easily and quickly have your blood test taken, after which our healthcare professionals will review the results with you over the phone.
