What is protected against?
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) is a contagious virus that primarily affects the respiratory tract and can lead to serious illness, especially in infants, the elderly, and people with underlying medical conditions. RSV is one of the most common causes of pneumonia and bronchiolitis in infants under 1 year of age and a major cause of hospitalization in the elderly.
For older adults over 60 years of age and people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma or cardiovascular disease, RSV can lead to serious respiratory infections and in some cases require intensive treatment.
What does the vaccine do?
The RSV vaccine contains a recombinant F protein that stimulates the body to produce antibodies against RSV. Studies have shown that the vaccine reduces the risk of RSV-related hospitalizations by up to 80% and reduces the risk of serious infection.
Vaccine course
- The vaccine is given as a single dose and is recommended for:
- People over 60 years of age to reduce the risk of serious illness.
