HPV Vaccine for Organizations

What is protected against?

HPV (Human Papillomavirus) is a virus that can lead to several serious diseases, including cervical cancer, anal cancer, oropharyngeal cancer and genital warts. According to the Statens Serum Institut (SSI), HPV is responsible for approximately 600 cancer cases annually in Denmark. It is therefore an important vaccination to prevent these diseases and protect health. In addition, there is an increasing incidence of penile cancer in Denmark, a disease that can also be caused by HPV infection. HPV, especially types 16 and 18, are involved in the development of penile cancer, just as they are associated with cervical cancer and other HPV-related cancers.

What does the vaccine do?

The HPV vaccine protects against the highest-risk HPV types, including HPV 16 and 18, which are responsible for over 70% of all cases of cervical cancer. In addition, the vaccine protects against HPV 6 and 11, which cause around 90% of all cases of genital warts. The vaccine is therefore an important tool to reduce the risk of cancer and other related diseases caused by HPV, including penile cancer.

Vaccine course

  • Under 15 years: Two doses at least 6 months apart.
  • Over 15 years: Three doses spread over 6 months.

The vaccine is offered free of charge to all 12-year-old girls and boys as part of the Danish childhood vaccination program, ensuring that young people receive the necessary protection early in life. It is important to follow the dosage recommendations to achieve optimal protection.
