TBE cases are increasing

Increase in TBE virus: More people are infected with tick-borne encephalitis - protect yourself with vaccination

The latest figures from the Statens Serum Institut show a worrying increase in the number of confirmed cases of TBE (Tick-Borne Encephalitis) in Denmark. In 2024, 17 cases were registered compared to 13 the year before. At the same time, there is a spread to new geographical areas, including Egedal, Odsherred and Randers municipalities. This suggests that Denmark is slowly moving towards "Swedish conditions", where several hundred cases are seen annually.

TBE virus – what is it?
TBE is a viral disease transmitted by tick bites. In the vast majority of cases, the infection progresses without symptoms. However, in approximately 10% of cases, serious central nervous system effects develop in the form of encephalitis with symptoms such as fever, severe headache, balance disorders, convulsions and in some cases paralysis or loss of consciousness. Adults and the elderly are particularly at risk of a complicated course.

Why get vaccinated?
TBE cannot be treated with antiviral agents. Therefore, prevention is absolutely central. The vaccine consists of three doses and provides a high degree of protection against the disease. Vaccination is recommended for people who regularly spend time in nature in risk areas – for example, forest visitors, hunters, horse riders, scouts, dog walkers, mushroom pickers or outdoor enthusiasts who often move away from the trails.

Should you be worried?
TBE virus still relatively rare in Denmark – but the trend is going in the wrong direction. Although only a small proportion of ticks carry the virus, the infection is localized in hotspots, and it may be impossible to assess the risk until it is too late.

Be proactive – protect yourself with TBE vaccine
For people who frequently spend time in forested areas in affected regions – and especially off-trails – getting vaccinated may be a wise decision. The Danish Doctors' Vaccination Service reported an 80% increase in demand for TBE vaccination in 2024, indicating a growing awareness of the threat.

The vaccine is given in three doses and costs DKK 650 per dose or DKK 1,800 for the entire course.
